Model trains have been around almost as long as real life railway trains. Model railway trains find their origins in 1891 when the first complete model train system was released by Marklin, a German company. Marklin followed up the first model railway train with a series of accessories, track expansions, and track gauges.

These days model railway trains are still a popular hobby, there are countless clubs, equipment, special interests groups, manufacturers and hobbyists out there. With so much variety those looking to get into the hobby might find themselves overwhelmed. Not to mention the model train hobby has developed its own terminology. It can take some time to get used to phrases such as “gauge”, “reverse loop”, “mainline”, “scale” and “benchwork”.

The sheer variety of model railway trains means that any hobbyist can specialize in a certain type. Anyone can find an area of interest that suits them when it comes to model trains. Some model train hobbyists prefer to act more as a collector, gathering parts of a particular kind whether it be operation, railway, or something else. Other hobbyists want to build an entire railway layout. There are even some hardcore hobbyists who want to create model train layouts that are as realistic as possible. These types of hobbyists seek to emulate actual railway operations with their model trains.

Let’s time to go over some of that model train hobbyistâ??s terminology. We’ll begin with choice of scale. The scale is the size of the model train compared to the real life size of the train it represents. The most popular scale is the HO scale which is 1/87th the actual train size. That means 1 inch of an HO scale track presents 7 feet and for inches of a real world track. Something on a larger scale, such as a G or “garden” scale requires a lot of space but is a much easier model to work with. A much smaller size like the N scale of model railway trains are difficult to work with but allow a hobbyist to build much more complicated layouts in a smaller space.

What gauge any given track is depends on the scale. Gauge is the word used to describe the distance between track rails. Naturally the gauge of a track needed will be smaller the smaller the scale of the model. Benchwork is the word that describes the supports of one’s model train layout. Beginning hobbyists generally begin with a flat layout. But of course a railroad isn’t always going to be flat in real life, so the benchwork can help create much more complex and realistic terrain. Many hobbyists enjoy building their benchwork and track layouts and crafting the scenery so that they can create a realistic small-scale representation of real world railroad operations.

Model railway trains have only become more sophisticated since Marklin introduced the hobby back in the late 1800’s and today it is a highly accessible hobby. With so many choices it’s possible to find something to interest any budding hobbyist. But how do you get started? Well there are a number of resources you could look to. Model railroading is a great hobby for so many reasons. Firstly, it can be done by people of all ages. All you need is some model rail information and then a certain desire to build track layouts and collect trains. If you have the desire and get in to the hobby then you will likely stay involved for the rest of your life.

These days you can find people interested in the hobby from all age groups. There are some very small children that enjoy the hobby. There are also people well into their eighties. This shows the range and the interest in model trains.

Anyone can buy a small track and one locomotive and get started in an afternoon. When you buy a pre-built layout you have everything you need. Generally this will be an oval shape, which is very easy to construct and build. From here, many people expand upon the oval and create fantastic railroad tracks.

You can really create some incredible rail track layouts. You can build certain scenes if you want or create scenarios that you have seen or observed. For example, you might want to model a certain period in time. Many people like to create the steam age when locomotives were the dominant mode of transport.

You could also create a station setting. This is very exiting as it allows you have many locomotives operating at once. You can have them changing tracks, loading and unloading goods and being repaired.

The hobby is very popular with young boys because it gives them a sense of freedom and control over their own virtual world. They are able to create anything they want without restriction. They can also see the trains running around the track that which can be an exhilarating experience.

Remember that model trains are exact replicas of the real thing. They are identical in every way except on a smaller scale. This is very different from toy trains that are not able to run on track and often get broken very easily. As such, model trains are much more popular and sought after, as they are the closest thing to the originals.

After a long day at work or school, it is great to go home and spend hours with your model trains. You can drift away into your own dream world where you don’t have anything else to think about.

You can plan the layouts that you want to create and other trains that you want to buy and have running on your track. There are so many options open to the hobbyist that the options are almost endless. You can produce some incredible layouts, which makes the hobby very addictive.

You can also move up or down in scale. For example, you can begin with an average sized scale and then move to a much bigger scale that can run in your garden. This gives the hobbyist even more options and directions that they can take.

There are really so many things to do with model trains that you can have a lifetime of fun and still not explore every option.

The early models of locomotives were made first as an advertising campaign for the early railways that eventually became a â??toyâ?. The significant event in toy train history was first launched by Marklin in 1891 with a complete system of trains. He had introduced a series of standard track gauges, ready to use track sections for those gauges, and a variety of locomotives, rolling stock and accessories to use.

The hobby of toy model trains embraces a huge range. It combines with model railways where you build a layout that characterizes a real railway system but using the products or standards of a commercial manufacturer rather than a general modelerâ??s standard (for example, a German outline layout with Marklin standards) â?? which in the US is called hi-rail modeling. On the other hand, you can be just a collector which is not keen into running but decided on owning every variation of a particular range or locomotive. A lot of us can be anywhere in between these two.

There will always be a part of us who at one time had owned toy model train sets when we were children and are now recreating the dreams we could never have realized when we were small. But we try to encourage younger enthusiasts, and those who want to indulge in train models that have little or no connection with their childhood.

Whatever an individual’s interests, toy model train is a wide-ranging hobby. And while most of the membership is male, we do not believe that trains are just a boy’s hobby, some girls always did play toy model trains and probably more wanted to. You can now.
